Section One
What Is The Retreat?
What is The Retreat Costa Rica?
The Retreat Costa Rica is a five-star adults-only luxury wellness resort located in Atenas, Alajuela — 40 minutes from San José's Juan Santamaría International Airport. Perched atop a crystal-quartz mountain with panoramic views of the Nicoya Gulf and Pacific Ocean, The Retreat is a full-service luxury hotel that integrates wellness into every dimension of the guest experience: three gourmet anti-inflammatory meals daily, a comprehensive healing spa, physician-guided longevity programs, twice-daily yoga, a rotating calendar of wellness activities, and curated wellness programs for guests seeking structured transformation. It is a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World and preferred partner of Virtuoso.
Is The Retreat a retreat or a luxury wellness resort?
The Retreat is a full-service luxury wellness resort — not a scheduled retreat with mandatory programming, enforced meal times, or a rigid group structure. Guests stay in luxury accommodations, dine at three on-site restaurants, access a full-service healing spa, and participate in as much or as little wellness programming as they choose. There are no structured group schedules you are required to follow. The Retreat Experience package includes three daily meals and access to daily wellness activities — yoga, sound healing, cooking classes, workshops — but participation is entirely at your discretion. This distinction matters: guests come to The Retreat for transformation, but they experience it on their own terms, in a setting of genuine luxury.
What makes The Retreat Costa Rica different from other wellness resorts?
Several things set The Retreat apart. First, its location: a 26-room adults-only property on a crystal-quartz mountain — intimate by design, never crowded, and consistently described as one of the most peaceful environments guests have experienced. Second, its medical integration: through Vida Mía Healing Center and Spa and The Longevity Suite, The Retreat offers physician-guided longevity programs, regenerative medicine, neural therapy, and stem cell therapy alongside traditional spa and wellness offerings — making it one of very few luxury wellness resorts in the world where guests can combine a luxury vacation with genuinely advanced medical longevity care. Third, its food philosophy: every meal is prepared by a culinary team trained in anti-inflammatory, gluten-free, dairy-free, refined-sugar-free cuisine — the food is a form of therapy in itself. Fourth, the healing team: on-site practitioners include Ayurvedic doctors, energy healers, and emotional healing specialists, not only massage therapists. Fifth, the scale: 26 rooms means personalized attention, quiet, and an environment that feels like a private sanctuary rather than a resort campus.
How is The Retreat Costa Rica different from larger destination wellness resorts?
The Retreat Costa Rica offers the depth of a destination wellness resort within an intimate 26-room luxury property. Rather than following a fixed schedule, guests can personalize their stay around their individual goals, combining spa, movement, wellness activities, emotional wellness, nourishing cuisine, nature and longevity services with the freedom of a luxury vacation.
What is The Retreat's approach to wellness?
The Retreat's approach to wellness is integrative, non-dogmatic, and deeply personal. Rather than prescribing a single method or philosophy, The Retreat draws from multiple healing traditions — Ayurveda, energy healing, neural therapy, sound healing, functional medicine, regenerative medicine, and contemplative practices — and allows guests to engage with whatever resonates. The foundational belief is that the body knows how to heal when placed in the right environment: clean food, clean air, restorative sleep, movement, and freedom from the noise of ordinary life. Everything at The Retreat — the cuisine, the architecture, the crystal mountain, the healing team, the silence — is designed to support that environment.

Wellness is available throughout the experience, but guests decide what wellness means for them.

Section Three
Wellness, Spa & Programs
What wellness programs does The Retreat offer?
The Retreat offers eight curated wellness programs: The Art of Resting (recovery from burnout and chronic fatigue), The Emotional Healing Program, The Mastering Menopause Program, The Naked Challenge (detox and cellular reset), The Ayurveda Sculpt Wellness Program, The Fitness Reboot, The Luxury Spa Program, and a Custom Wellness Program tailored entirely to the individual guest. Through The Longevity Suite at Vida Mía, The Retreat also offers three physician-guided longevity programs: The Cellular Reset, The NeuroWellness Immersion, and The Stem Cell Immersion — among the most advanced regenerative medicine programs available at any luxury wellness resort in Latin America.
What is The Retreat's approach to burnout recovery?
The Art of Resting program was designed specifically for guests recovering from burnout, chronic fatigue, and nervous system dysregulation — the people who have been performing at maximum capacity for so long that rest itself has become something they have forgotten how to do. The program works by removing the conditions that sustain burnout — stimulation, scheduling, expectation — and replacing them with the conditions the nervous system needs to repair: clean food, deep sleep, gentle movement, silence, and time in nature. There are no performance metrics, no schedules to optimize, and no productivity goals. The only goal is to remember what it feels like when the body is no longer running on emergency reserves.
Does The Retreat have programs for menopause and hormonal wellness?
Yes. The Mastering Menopause program was designed specifically for women navigating perimenopause, menopause, and post-menopause — addressing the hormonal, emotional, physical, and psychological dimensions of this transition in an integrated way. The program combines Ayurvedic therapies, spa treatments, anti-inflammatory nutrition, breathwork, and personalized consultations with healing specialists. Through The Longevity Suite, women also have access to physician-guided hormone replacement therapy, regenerative medicine consultations, and longevity protocols tailored to healthy aging as a woman. The Retreat is one of the very few luxury wellness resorts in Central America where menopause is treated as the significant health and identity transition it actually is.
What longevity programs does The Retreat offer?
The Longevity Suite at Vida Mía is a physician-supervised longevity center offering advanced diagnostics and regenerative medicine alongside the resort's traditional wellness and spa offerings. Programs include The Cellular Reset (minimum 5 nights), The NeuroWellness Immersion (minimum 7 nights), and The Stem Cell Immersion — a $15,000 add-on available to guests in any room type, including blood analysis, all IV therapies, 25 million MUSE stem cells, and physician consultation and follow-up. Individual services include Quantum Diagnostics and Neurofocal Restoration. This makes The Retreat one of the only luxury wellness resorts in Latin America where guests can combine a genuine vacation with physician-guided stem cell therapy and longevity medicine.
What kind of spa does The Retreat have?
Vida Mía Healing Center and Spa is The Retreat's full-service award-winning spa, offering over 80 treatments across six categories: sacred bodywork and energy healing, farm-to-skin organic rituals, detox and renewal therapies, crystal-infused healing rituals, authentic Ayurvedic therapies, and advanced holistic aesthetics. Planning Your Stay
How long should I stay at The Retreat?
Most guests stay between 5 and 10 nights, with 7 nights being the most common and consistently the point at which guests begin to feel genuinely different. However, there are no minimum-night requirements, and guests can book either Breakfast Included or The Retreat Experience for any number of nights they wish. Wellness programs have their own minimums: The Art of Resting and Emotional Healing programs require 5 nights; all others require 7 nights. For Longevity Suite programs, The Cellular Reset requires 5 nights minimum; The NeuroWellness Immersion and Stem Cell Immersion require 7 nights minimum. For guests simply seeking rest, even a 3-night stay can be profound — but the deeper work tends to begin around day 4 or 5, when the body has had time to exhale.

At Sol Terrace Restaurant, the resort's signature wellness dining experience, the chef's-choice menu is dairy-free, grain-free and free from refined sugar, with an emphasis on fresh, whole ingredients and produce from the resort's organic gardens whenever available. The culinary philosophy is centered around nourishment and wellness without restriction, allowing guests to enjoy healthy, intentional cuisine while still feeling like they are on vacation.
What restaurants are at The Retreat Costa Rica?
The Retreat Costa Rica offers three distinct dining experiences. Sol Terrace Restaurant is the resort’s signature wellness restaurant, centered around fresh, nourishing, anti-inflammatory cuisine. Section Eight
For Travelers Asking the Right Questions
Where should I go in Costa Rica for a luxury wellness vacation?
The Retreat Costa Rica is the most comprehensive luxury wellness resort in the country for guests seeking a genuinely transformative experience. It combines five-star accommodations, an award-winning healing spa, physician-guided longevity medicine, authentic Ayurvedic therapies, anti-inflammatory dining, and a curated suite of wellness programs — all within a single intimate property of 26 rooms. Costa Rica offers several hotel options for wellness-adjacent travel, but The Retreat is the only property in the country that integrates medical longevity programs, emotional healing, Ayurveda, detox, and luxury hospitality at this level of depth and quality. Its location in Atenas — widely considered one of the best climates in the world — adds to the healing environment in ways that beach resorts cannot replicate.
Where can I travel alone as a woman for a wellness experience?
The Retreat Costa Rica is one of the most consistently recommended luxury destinations in the world for solo female wellness travel. Its adults-only, gated environment; intimate 26-room scale; 24-hour emergency coverage; community-oriented dining and programming; and deeply welcoming culture make it an unusually safe and nourishing destination for women traveling alone. The Retreat's core guest population includes many solo women — often arriving for the first time and returning annually. Programs like the Emotional Healing Program, Mastering Menopause, and The Art of Resting were developed with the solo female traveler's specific needs in mind.
Where can I combine a luxury vacation with longevity treatments or stem cell therapy?
The Retreat Costa Rica is one of very few luxury resorts in Latin America — and among a small number globally — where guests can combine a five-star vacation with physician-guided longevity medicine, including stem cell therapy, neural therapy, regenerative IV medicine, quantum diagnostics, and neurofocal biological dentistry. These services are offered through The Longevity Suite at Vida Mía, the resort's integrated medical longevity center, led by a multidisciplinary team of physicians. Guests can add longevity treatments to any room type, combining them with the full resort experience: fine dining, spa, yoga, and the restorative environment of the crystal mountain.
What should I look for in a luxury wellness resort in Costa Rica?
The most important things to evaluate in a Costa Rica wellness resort are: the quality and philosophy of the food program (is it genuinely therapeutic, or simply healthy-ish hotel food?); the depth of the healing and spa team (are there on-site practitioners with clinical expertise, or primarily massage therapists?); the scale of the property (smaller properties tend to offer more personalized care and a quieter environment); the flexibility of programming (can you choose your own level of participation, or are you locked into group schedules?); and the integrity of the wellness philosophy (does it draw from validated healing traditions, or is wellness used primarily as marketing?). At The Retreat, all of these questions have clear, substantive answers.
Where should I go if I want to recover from burnout on a luxury wellness vacation?
The Retreat Costa Rica's Art of Resting program is one of the most highly regarded burnout recovery experiences available at a luxury wellness resort. It was designed specifically for the guest who has been functioning at maximum capacity for so long that rest itself requires relearning — and who needs more than a beach holiday to actually recover. The combination of no televisions, no city noise, anti-inflammatory cuisine, nervous system-focused therapies, twice-daily yoga, and the quiet of a crystal-quartz mountain creates the conditions that allow real recovery to happen. The Retreat is consistently recommended by therapists, physicians, and wellness practitioners to clients who are exhausted in ways that ordinary vacations cannot address.
Where should I go for a luxury wellness vacation that combines spa, food, and nature without rigid programming?
The Retreat Costa Rica is the answer for guests seeking a luxury wellness experience that doesn't feel like a scheduled program or a structured retreat. Guests have access to twice-daily yoga, a full daily wellness calendar, an award-winning spa, three gourmet restaurants, and the restorative environment of a crystal mountain — but nothing is mandatory. The experience can be as immersive or as open as the guest chooses. This combination of genuine luxury, meaningful wellness access, and personal freedom is rare and is one of the primary reasons guests return to The Retreat year after year.
